What is the Lake Como Juneteenth Celebration?
The Lake Como Juneteenth Celebration is a community-driven tradition that honors freedom, heritage, and the enduring strength of the Lake Como community. What began as a simple idea has grown into an annual celebration that brings together families, neighbors, and generations to reflect, reconnect, and celebrate a shared history rooted in resilience and pride.
More than an event, it is a space where culture is celebrated, stories are shared, and the community comes together as one.
How It Started
In June 2020, during a time when the world was navigating uncertainty and separation, Kendra Williams, founder of Richelle’s Heart, was inspired while watching Ms. Opal Lee advocate for Juneteenth to be recognized as a national holiday.
Moved by that moment, she asked a simple but powerful question:
“Why doesn’t Lake Como celebrate Juneteenth?”
What started as a Facebook post quickly turned into a community conversation. With safety in mind during the COVID-19 pandemic, the initial idea was to create a decorated car ride through the neighborhood—families driving through the streets, celebrating together while staying apart.
However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, permits, and safety regulations, the event was ultimately unable to take place that year.
But the vision did not stop there.
In 2021, that vision became reality with the first official Lake Como Juneteenth Celebration, held at the Como Community Center—the same year Juneteenth was recognized as a national holiday. What started as a question became a movement that continues to grow each year.
Why It Matters
Lake Como is more than a neighborhood—it is a historic and deeply rooted African American community that has thrived for over a century. With a legacy built on strength, perseverance, and unity, it is important that its history continues to be celebrated and preserved.
The Lake Como Juneteenth Celebration was created to:
Honor the history of freedom and African American culture
Celebrate the legacy of a community that has stood the test of time
Bring families together across generations
Create opportunities for connection, education, and growth
This celebration is about remembering where we come from while building a future rooted in pride, purpose, and community.
